Last updated 22 October 2026Privacy Policy
Money-Sense ("we") respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect through Money-Sense, why, who it is shared with and the rights you have under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Money-Sense was designed to ask for as little as possible.
1. The short version
- We never ask for your name, ID number, employee number or bank login to use the budget check.
- Your employer can never see who has registered or anything you entered. It sees group totals only, and any number under ten is hidden.
- We do not sell your information and we do not show advertising.
- You can ask us to delete your account and data at any time.
2. Who is responsible
The responsible party for your personal information is Money-Sense. Questions about privacy can be sent to tyron@money-sense.co.za.
3. What we collect
Depending on how you use Money-Sense:
- The public budget check: the household details and monthly amounts you enter, and the report that results. This is stored without your name or any identifier. You receive a reference number to quote if you ask us about it. We also keep anonymous, grouped usage records (for example the income band and which warning signs appeared) to improve the benchmark.
- Your account: your email address or mobile number and your password (stored in a protected, scrambled form), your company code if you have one, and the date you were last active.
- Your saved budgets: the reports you save while signed in. They are linked to your account and visible only to you.
- Enquiries: if an employer or other person fills in a contact form we collect the name, email address, phone number, company name and message they give us.
- Payments: PayFast processes payments. We receive confirmation that a payment was made and its status. We do not see or store card or bank details.
- Technical data: your browser keeps a sign-in session so you stay signed in. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
4. Why we use it
- To provide the budget check, saved reports, the compare tool and the calculators.
- To create and secure your account, link you to your employer's access if you have a code and send you messages about your account.
- To report group totals to employers. These never identify individuals.
- To take payment, keep records and meet legal duties.
- To keep Money-Sense working, secure and accurate, and to improve the benchmark from anonymous data.
5. What employers see
An employer that pays for access sees how many staff registered, how many were active, which parts of Money-Sense are used most and how that changes over time. It never sees who registered, who used it, any individual's answers or report or any breakdown by department or branch. Any figure based on fewer than ten people is shown as "fewer than 10".
6. Who we share it with
We use trusted service providers (operators) to run Money-Sense. They may only use your information to provide their service to us:
- Supabase: database and sign-in. Our database is hosted in the United States (US East, North Virginia).
- Vercel: website hosting.
- Resend: sending emails such as account and HR invitations.
- PayFast: payment processing.
- Google Workspace: our email and documents.
- We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
7. Information leaving South Africa
Some of our providers store or process information outside South Africa, including in the United States. We use providers that apply security safeguards and we only share what is needed to run the service.
8. Keeping it safe
Information is sent over encrypted connections. Our database is private, passwords are scrambled and access to it is limited to our server and authorised administrators. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures and will tell you and the Information Regulator if there is a breach that affects you.
9. How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account we will remove your personal information promptly and in any case within 30 days, except what we must keep by law. Anonymous, grouped records that cannot identify you may be kept.
10. Your rights
You may ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you,
- correct information that is wrong,
- delete your account and personal information,
- stop using your information for a purpose you object to.
11. Complaints
Please contact us first at tyron@money-sense.co.za. You may also complain to the Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za.
12. Children
Money-Sense is for adults. It is not intended for people under 18.
13. Changes
We may update this policy. The date at the top shows when it last changed. We will tell account holders about material changes.
